Initial coursework ideas

For my coursework, I am going to be doing a screenplay for a thriller. The main theme will be a mixture of a film that starts with an enigma and the development of a single character.

Peer observation of Auteur presentation

Image
Director: Steven Spielberg Observed by: Tate    What did my peer learn about my director: my peer learned that Steven Spielberg directed many differing films such as war horse, saving private Ryan and Ready Player One. He also learned that Spielberg used a lot of themes such as daddy issues/ broken nuclear family, the use of lights to create mystery and that her used Composer John Williams to compose the film scores. My peer also learned that Spielberg didn’t get along well with his father and there are shots such as the Spielberg face and POV shots used. Spielberg likes to put the audience in the characters shoes is another trait that my peer had learned from the presentation.    What did my peer learn about the Auteur Theory: My peer had learned that directors are the authors of films and that Francois Truffaut was a leading director in the Auteur Theory.    My peer had mentioned that the presentation was very informative as I had spoken about a lot ...

Evaluation of why?

Evaluation of the film Why?    There are many positive parts of the film. One of them being a good narrative that surrounds the film. The film is based on a relationship and explores the two emotions of love and jealousy. The narrative is also quite easy to follow, which was hard to achieve considering the film is a silent film. There is a sense of the narrative having an easy flow. There are no abrupt changes, the transitions from any changes in the storyline. We have used a range of   shots such a point of view shot   a back shot. There are also uses of close ups and mid shots, allowing the audience to see what the characters are feeling based on expression and body language.      On the other hand, there are a few problems with the film. The steadiness of the camera is not what was expected, making the film look unprofessional. Also, there was a technical problem that caused one of the shots to be smaller than the fame, mak...

Winter’s bone Essay

How far does ‘Winter’s Bone’ rely upon an understanding of its social context? Refer to at least one sequence in detail     In the film, there is scene of a ‘showdown’ between Ree, Teardrop and the local authorities. The rule of thirds in the beginning of the sequence shows the two sides of the family in the car; Ree wants answers for her dad and teardrop wants to put it to bed. Regarding the social context of the film and a message that is portrayed throughout it is that there is no such thing as questions. If someone has disappeared they have disappeared. This is effective in the way that the rule of thirds helps the audience to truly visualise the dynamics of a Missouri family living in the Ozarks where the family loyalty is the strongest.     When flashing lights appear behind the car, Ree tells Teardrop to pull over and ‘see what he wants’. Teardrop becomes reluctant. This is because the Ozarks are a place where the men are dominant, what they say or in this...

Winters Bone

Throughout the film, the is a strong motif of animals. This is from the prints of various animals on the t-shirts and other items of clothing on the women and the pets that Sonny and Ashlee have like the kittens and dogs at the beginning if the film. One can perceive this as a symbol the the family is close to nature; the wilderness is their home. This is an example of active viewing where the audience is shown not told about themes and problems that arise. For example, poverty is shown through the close up of Ree cutting up the whole potato and frying all if the potato for food and the fact that the dogs are given whatever is in the fridge at the time. Men are also a strong presence in the film even though they have a lack of appearances. Women have to ask then to enter houses and the women are 'henchmen' to the men, they will do anything.
